Off the western coast of Cozumel, Mexico—part of the second-largest coral reef system in the world—I was nearing the end of an unforgettable dive in crystal-clear waters. Just before beginning my safety stop, I spotted a stingray gliding gracefully across the sandy ocean floor.
Accompanying the ray was a bar jack, swimming closely above it—a perfect example of symbiosis in the marine world. Stingrays are searching the sand for hidden clams and mollusks, while the jacks keep pace, ready to snatch up any scraps or startled prey stirred from the seabed.
It was a brief but beautiful moment—one of those quiet scenes of underwater cooperation that make diving so extraordinary.
